Choose Love

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

“I used to want to save the world. To end war and bring peace to mankind. But then, I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. And I learned that inside every one of them, there will always be both. A choice each must make for themselves. Something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know, that only love can truly save the world. So I stay, I fight, and I give, for the world I know can be.” Diana – Wonder Woman

I Want to Save the World

I cry when I watch Wonder Woman. Every single time. I can’t help myself. For me, this movie was the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

I grew up with the 1970’s Wonder Woman TV show with Linda Carter. I loved that show, and I loved having a strong female role model. We didn’t have many at the time. But I wanted more Diana! I wanted to see her character get a movie. And I finally got my wish.

Seeing the Amazons was such an emotional experience for me. It was awesome to see such a strong and diverse group of women! The training and fighting scenes were so amazing that I was absolutely giddy!

And Diana. I could not possibly love her more. Even as a little girl, she had the fire and passion that would one day win the world. But not before her heart was broken.

When faced with the reality that humanity was deeply flawed and capable of great evil, she gave us the gift of choice. She knew that actions could not be changed without hearts being changed first. She would fight for us, but not chose for us.

For Diana, the choice was clear. Love. For the rest of us, it’s a lot harder.

Choose Love

Our choices are influenced by our circumstances and our prejudices. They sometimes come out of our fear and anger. And we don’t have to look very far to find something to be angry about in this world. The list is endless.

Hate and blame are easy. Love and patience are hard. Is the villain in our story truly irredeemable? And do we get to make that decision? Maybe we have to give them the same gift of choice that Diana gave humanity.

Sometimes we must have faith that events will unfold as they should. But we can decide every day how we will live and how we will shape the future. We can choose love.

This world gives us so many reasons to choose to hate. But we, like Diana, can choose love. Because our choices define us. And the actions that come from those choices make it possible for real heroes to exist.
