The first time I saw Christopher Reeve on the big screen, he was Superman and I fell in love with the character.
I thought it would be fun to highlight some of the best quotes from the Superman franchise.
"People are afraid of what they don't understand."—Man of Steel
The thing that appeals to me most about Superman is that he's an outsider. Sure, his powers are cool, but I identify with him on a soul level. I always felt like a bit of an outsider myself.
I'm an only child who was a geek way before it was cool. As an empath, I always felt different. I connected with people on a soul level but was shy and socially awkward. I was bullied a lot growing up and felt very isolated.
Yeah, I get that part of Superman.
"Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith first, the trust part comes later."—Man of Steel
The things I like most about Superman are the things that make him the most human. Something is comforting about knowing that such a powerful hero is, in some ways, just as vulnerable as we are.
I like to be in control, but control is an illusion. We often have to rely on our intuition and step out in faith. I like that even Superman has to do that.
"It's never as bad as it seems. You're stronger than you think you are. Trust me."—All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely
In this great comic moment, Superman sees a young boy who is getting ready to jump from a rooftop. He talks to him and saves his life.
It's a compelling scene because it reminds us that we can all make a difference in someone's life, even if we don't have powers.
"All those things I can do. All those powers. And I couldn’t even save him."—Superman (1978)
I woke up with this quote in my head, probably because I saw my mother yesterday. She is in an assisted living facility, and I realized yesterday that she won't be able to go home.
It is humbling to realize that even Superman couldn't save his parent. Jonathan died from a heart attack, and he was powerless to change that.
I know how that feels. My father died from a heart attack too, and now my mother's health is declining. We all have to face losing loved ones, but we can honor them by the way we live and treat others.
"You've been hiding your whole life, Clark. But if you do anything other than what I think you were meant to do, you'll still be hiding, because you'll never be able to show people who you really are, and what you can do."—Superman: Earth One, Volume One
This comic resonated with me because I don't want to settle. I want to go "all-out" for what I love and am created to do. Writing, photography, and design are all passions of mine. I'm passionate about music too. I would rather risk everything and fail than sit back and wonder "what if".
Jonathan Kent spoke these wise words to his son when he was young and deciding what to do with his life. Can you imagine Clark selling out his convictions for a job with a big salary?
Me either.
My love of Superman goes far beyond his powers. I love what he represents. Hope. It's what the symbol on his chest stands for.
I hope at least one of these quotes resonated with you.
